American and Hyatt have a really nice reciprocal-earning agreement, which is great for me, as someone who is based in Dallas and loves Hyatt hotels. Today, Hyatt and American have announced an intriguing new status match challenge which makes the reciprocal earning agreement even better.
I know what you’re saying, “But Andy, status match challenges happen all the time!” Fair point, but here’s why this one is even better.
The status you achieve will last until February 2022. And it works in both directions. Hyatt elites can earn American status and American elites can earn Hyatt status…through February 2022.

The challenges begin today…kinda. Basically, it will work like this: you’ll have 90 days to complete the requirements of the respective challenge but you can sign up at any point between today and September 30, 2020, to time as closely as you can to your travel plans. The most important thing to do is make sure your World of Hyatt and AAdvantage accounts are linked.
- World of Hyatt Explorists and Globalists can earn AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, or Platinum Pro status by flying on eligible tickets for flights operated and marketed by American or American Eagle
- American AAdvantage Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum members can earn World of Hyatt Explorist or Globalist status by booking eligible rate or award night through Hyatt channels

Earn Explorist status with 10 tier-qualifying nights
AAdvantage Executive Platinum
Earn Explorist status with 10 tier-qualifying nights
Earn Globalist status with 20 tier-qualifying nights

My hot take
I think this is a great program. I think people are wondering what airlines and hotels will do with their loyalty programs with the nascent travel restrictions around the coronavirus (and/or the more proper scientific name/s thereof) and, although there’s no indication this is related to that, it’s a great chance to lock in a mid to top status tier for the next 21 months.
Hyatt has been adding hotel chains to their portfolio at a rapid pace lately, making it easier than ever to earn not only World of Hyatt points but also AAdvantage miles at the same time. It’s good to see the two brands working together like this.
