2019 was a wonderful travel year for me.  As it winds down, I thought I’d take a look back at my 10 favorite images as a quick recap of my year.  I know I already shared my favorite aviation photography moments but this post will only have 10 images (instead of 84) so hopefully it does a little better than that post did.

10. DFW Airport from a new perspective

In March I did a project with Epic Helicopters where I wanted to fly over DFW Airport and get some top-down shots of the terminal buildings, an homage to my buddy Mike Kelley.  This was my favorite of the bunch, capturing two complete terminals at the same time!

9. Sparks Lake, Oregon

It was another great year at the Sony Kando Trip getting to meet new people, rekindle old friendships, and take some amazing pictures!  The morning fog at Sparks Lake added a ton of mood to this incredible sunrise, and the guy on the rocks added some humanity and scale to the scene.  Just love this one.

8. Cape Town, South Africa

Yes, astute observers will notice I’ve not yet written about our trip to Cape Town back in January.  I’m going to write about it next month and have so many pictures to share, including this amazing one from a helicopter tour we took on our first day.

7. Lahaina’s Banyan Tree Sunset, Maui, Hawaii

Maui holds a special place in my family’s heart, which made returning there in June with them all the more special.  I did a little video about this tree (the largest in the USA), and really loved the sunlight coming through the enormous branches of it.  Absolutely wonderful trip with people very special to me.

6. Antelope Canyon Sandfall

I think people are probably tired of my Antelope Canyon Tripod Ban coverage by now, but I’m proud of the images and even was featured on PetaPixel!  This is one of those classic images that everybody has but I was happy I got to put my own touch on it.

5. BvB Dallas

For those of you who haven’t seen my I Want to Tell You about BvB Dallas posts, it’s a special young professionals organization in Dallas that means a lot to me.  They raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care, all centering around a powderpuff football game played in the legendary Cotton Bowl in Dallas.  I’m proud to be the lead photographer for the organization and can’t wait to be back next year!

4. Ice Fractals at Iceland’s Vestrahorn Mountain

3. Dallas Traveling Man Long Exposure

You knew I’d have to include one of my signature Dallas images, didn’t you?  This one is an all-time favorite.  It was a 4-minute exposure and the clouds were just perfect.  Every time I look at this image I notice even more details and fall more in love with it.

2. MD-80 Cockpit

The most detailed image ever taken of an American MD-80 cockpit shortly before it was retired.  I worked closely with American Airlines as the MD-80 neared retirement to produce a video of which I’m very proud and then escorted the MD-80 to Roswell on retirement day.  I cannot thank them enough for providing access to capture great moments like this.

1. Holy Trinity Church – Tbilisi, Georgia

I owe you a trip report from our awesome and random trip to Georgia (country, not the state) last March.  Don’t worry, it’s coming!  You’ll get the full story of this incredible structure then, but for now this simulated long exposure is by far my favorite image of the year, not necessarily because it’s the best image, but taking it is one of my favorite memories from a random and far-flung trip.
