Incredible Final Approach Picture Series from Mike Kelley

Incredible Final Approach Picture Series from Mike Kelley

I’ve featured the work of Mike Kelley a few times on the blog, most recently my support for his LA Airspace kickstarter project (my copy of LA Airspace is still sitting happily next to me as I type this).

This morning Mike debuted a new image series called Final Approach. It’s a series of high-resolution images of various aircraft making their final approach into LAX. Some of the details you can see are incredible, click through for some samples and a quick interview with Mike himself!

Picture of the Week: Washington Monument

Picture of the Week: Washington Monument

I’m on a quick trip to Washington DC at the moment, testing out some new gear from my friends at Bluffworks.

When I was out on the National Mall today the sky was just so beautiful and blue that I had to get a picture of one of the prominent monuments. The Washington Monument is a stark monolith in the middle of the National Mall and made for a nice subject, I thought.

This is a quick post but I hope you enjoy this week’s picture of the week! (Click through for the picture)

How I edited the Picture of the Week using the Adobe Lightroom mobile app

How I edited the Picture of the Week using the Adobe Lightroom mobile app

I hope you enjoyed yesterday’s Picture of the Week. I shot a little video of how I took the shot and then how I edited it in Adobe’s Lightroom mobile app. There’s some new functionality in the Lightroom app which allows you to edit RAW images, which is wonderful for people like me who like editing and posting on the go. It requires (at least for my iPhone) an SD card adapter, which you can buy from Apple.

This will be mainly for you photographers who like utilizing your own workflow instead of using Instagram or Facebook filters, but hopefully you appreciate the demo either way!

Picture of the Week: The Traveling Man Sculpture in Dallas

Hello everyone! I was just out in Deep Ellum, just east of downtown Dallas, Texas, taking this picture. Deep Ellum is an arts district that has recently undergone a nice revitalization but has maintained its gritty roots. In Deep Ellum you’ll find great restaurants, concert venues, and wonderful art installations and graffiti walls. Two statues buttress the entrance to Deep Ellum when heading south on Good Latimer Expressway. These status are of the same character: the Traveling Man. The DART train runs down the middle of Good Latimer Expressway and the Traveling Man relaxes across the street from the tracks, playing his guitar and waiting for his train.

I’ve always meant to take a picture of the Traveling Man and finally made time to do it tonight. As part of shooting the picture I also came up with a challenge: edit the Picture of the Week entirely on my iPhone using Adobe Lightroom Mobile’s new RAW editing capabilities. Without getting too lost in the weeds, this enables me to edit RAW images to the level of quality I would normally only achieve when back home or at the hotel with the full Adobe Lightroom version on my various Macs. In fact, I put together a little video about the challenge, so stay tuned for that!

Anyway, here it is, Deep Ellum’s Traveling Man! (click through for the picture!)

Picture of the Week: Qantas A380 Landing

Picture of the Week: Qantas A380 Landing

I love the Airbus A380. They are absolutely massive jets that are quiet, comfortable, and are the absolute pinnacle of aircraft engineering in my opinion. Now, to be fair, my opinion of the aircraft is probably juuuuust a bit biased since I’ve flown on them five times and each time has been in First Class 🙂

Anyway, I was out at DFW doing some planespotting a few weeks ago and managed to position myself perfectly to capture the Qantas A380 landing from one of the longest flights in the world. I hope you enjoy it, click through for the picture!
